It seems that most of the digital magazine services is targeting large publishing houses as they see it as them as the only money making area.

What small publishing house is going to pay these large sums to have a digital magazine created & have a minimal online response.

I think the digital magazine service industry is limited & is ignoring a large chunk of the market because they are only targeting subscriptions.

I think these large publishing houses are selling digital magazines is as much to do with marketing as subscriptions.

I think that smaller publishing houses want to use digital magazines to promote their magazines in order to reduce mailshots & lead time in introducing potential clients to their publications however the current charges by digital magazine service providers far outweight their budgets.

Publishing houses already have the skills to create digital magazines they simply need a presentation platform & a means to convert files.

I worked as a advertising manager for about 3 years & think the benefits of digital magazines are more significant to small publishers as marketing tools than subscription tools. Thats why i developed a version simply by using a small flash application & a photoshop autobatch sequence. The whole thing is done in a couple of minutes.

Well said. A perfect anecdote on why the newspaper industry is suffering. But here's a question: If we vote with our pocketbooks and the print media continue to downsize, I think we've all lost. It's the print industry that feeds all the things you mentioned. Factiva, wsj.com, etc. When do we get to a point where most media is digital and that industry becomes self-sustaining?
